ALAS submitted comments as Tennessee’s high court considered nonlawyer ownership of law firms.
Nesheba Kittling, Senior Vice President of Loss Prevention at ALAS, was recently quoted in the Law.com article “Tennessee Supreme Court Rejects PE Law Firm Ownership.”
ALAS was one of the organizations that submitted public comments to Tennessee's high court, which has been weighing the issue of nonlawyer ownership of law firms for over a year.
In the article, Nesheba notes: “From [ALAS’s] perspective, the Tennessee order is a positive development… As lawyers, we have a unique relationship with our clients where client interests are supposed to supersede anything else, including profits. The concern is that [by] introducing nonlawyer ownership, [including private equity], there may be an erosion of that, and there may be pressure to put profits over client interest and client service.”
