Conferences & Meetings
ALAS offers a variety of opportunities to its member firms to meet and discuss topics pertinent to the business and practice of law.
- Annual General Meetings (AGM)
- Each June, ALAS reports to its members on its previous fiscal year and current business goals and presents timely loss prevention programming of interest to large law firms. These programs qualify for MCLE credit. Past programs have featured a mock trial and jury deliberations of a difficult conflict of interest claim, and panel discussions ranging from the ethics and liability implications of lawyer mistakes to criminal law concerns for civil lawyers. There is no fee for this conference.
- Firm Administration Conferences (FAC)
- This biannual conference focuses on topics important to law firm administration personnel with an emphasis on developing best practices and procedures. Past programs have included panel discussions on document management and retention and mergers and lateral hiring practices. This conference is also free to members and qualifies for CPE and MCLE credit.
- Renewal Meetings
- Each fall ALAS's senior officers and board members conduct renewal meetings throughout the country. These meetings are designed to keep our members informed about our loss experience, the current claims environment, the company's financial performance, and other issues that have a direct bearing on our rates for the coming year.
- Regional Loss Prevention Conferences
- These are informal sessions in the 43 loss prevention regions intended to provide members an opportunity to remain abreast of professional malpractice trends and issues. Past topics have included the law firm trend of appointing an in-house general counsel, transactional lawyers as business advisers, and liability and ethics issues in family representation situations.
Consultation Group Meetings
-
Patent Consultation Group
- These periodic, practice group–specific meetings provide a forum for member firm lawyers to talk directly with their peers at other ALAS firms about practical issues that arise in their practice area. Past consultation group meetings have focused on patent and bankruptcy practices, and have included presentations by ALAS loss prevention and claims counsel and member firm practitioners, as well as roundtable discussion among the participants.

- Web Casts
- These are periodic broadcasts to all member firms focusing on issues that practicing lawyers face on a regular basis. The kickoff Web cast will focus on the loss prevention partner (LPP) function and the resources available to assist the LPP. Subsequent Web casts will focus on substantive issues and will be designed to enable the participants to earn CLE credit.
